This specimen was lot 4262 in Goldberg sale 70 (Los Angeles, September 2012), where it sold for $5,520. The catalog description[1] noted, "Italian States - Florence. Lira, ND. Cosimo I De Medici, 1536-1555. Head right. Reverse: Three figures. Toned. Very Rare. NGC graded EF-45." Cosimo de Medici (r. 1534-74) was the first grand duke of Tuscany, founding a line that lasted until 1737, when it fell to the Austrians. The Medici had long been the leading family of Florence but never the outright rulers until him.
