Spain SB119-43986r.jpg

This Spanish twenty-five centimos of a real was part of the first decimal reform of 1850-64. In 1850, the twenty reales was reduced to 26.91 grams. This having proven unsatisfactory, the coinage was reformed again in 1864. The twenty reales was dropped in favor of a two escudos silver coin, reduced to 25.96 grams. This date, of a type struck at Segovia 1854-64, is among the last to bear a traditional mintmark. During the 1850's, the regime changed the mintmark system to stars of various numbers of points. Unfortunately, the government, financially prostrate as usual, was unable to remint the old coins, which continued to circulate as before. This specimen was lot 43986 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2019), where it sold for $480. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. 25 Centimos, 1859. Segovia Mint. NGC PROOF-64 BN. Intricately defined with shallow reflectivity present in the fields and faint pinkish red color remaining in the protected areas. VERY RARE in this certified Proof quality with this being the finest graded of the three seen by NGC and PCGS combined. Ex: Isabel de Trastamara Collection."

Recorded mintage: unknown but common for the type.

Specification: copper.
