Aureo sale 232, lot 183
The specimen shown was lot 183 in Aureo y Calico sale 232 (Barcelona, March 2011), where it sold for 4,800 euros (about US$7,920 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,
"1742. Sevilla. PJ. 2 escudos. Insignificantes rayitas. Bella. Brillo original. Única acuñación de este valor y reinado en Sevilla. La pieza de la colección 'Caballero de las Yndias' en una conservación similar realizó 6.600 euros. Muy rara. MBC+/EBC-. (Two escudos of 1742, Seville mint; very attractive with original luster; the only issue of this denomination during this reign at Seville. The example from the collection 'Caballero de las Yndias' in similar condition realized 6,600 euros. Very rare, choice very fine/nearly extremely fine.)
This type was issued at Seville in 1749, not 1742 as stated above. It is priced over triple the issues of Philip V.
