This specimen was part of lot 25779 in Heritage sale 3026 (Long Beach, October 2013), which sold for $199.75. The catalog description noted, "South African assortment: a nice selection of mostly choice 20th-century coins, uncertified and perfect for the collector who likes to make his own grading decisions." In 1960, South Africa withdrew from the British Commonwealth and in 1961 issued all new coins, dropping the bust of the queen for explorer Jan van Riebeek. This type was issued 1953-60 along with a bronze penny (KM 46) and half penny (KM 45). It is common.
