South Africa 1949 2-1/2 shillings
This specimen was part of lot 29123 in Heritage sale 3022 (New York, January 2013), which sold for $1,175. The catalog description noted, "George VI Proof Set 1949, the nine coin set in the original mint case. Always popular as the Shilling is a Proof only date with a mintage of 800." The half crown or 2½ shillings was struck in South Africa 1923-60. It was .800 fine silver until 1950 and .500 fine thereafter.
