Sincona sale 4, lot 4448
This specimen was lot 4448 in Sincona sale 4 (Zurich, October 2011) where it sold for 1,600 CHF (about US$2,128 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND Sachsen, Herzogtum, ab 1547 Kurfürstentum, Albertiner Johann Georg I. 1611-1656. Dukat 1630. 100-Jahrfeier der Übergabe der Augsburger Konfession. Brustbild Johann Georgs im Kurornat nach rechts, mit geschultertem Schwert. Rv. Brustbild Johanns des Beständigen mit geschultertem Schwert nach rechts. Fast vorzüglich. (Germany, Duchy of Saxony, Albertine line, John George I, 1611-56, ducat of 1630, on the centennial of the Augsburg Confession. Obverse: bust of the duke to right in coronation robe with sword on shoulder; reverse: bust of John with sword on shoulder to right. Extremely fine)."
The SCWC mentions a silver thaler (Dav-7606), two thalers (Dav-7604), three thalers (Dav-7603), a gold ducat (Fr-2702, shown here), two ducats (Fr-2701) and ten ducats (Fr-2692). We may safely say that the duke regarded the centennial of the Augsburg Confession as an important occasion.
