Saarland is region of Germany bordering France. It is presently a state of the German Federal Republic but during the period 1945-57 was part of the French military occupation zone. The French made several attempts to incorporate the region into France but local sentiment and pressure from (then) West Germany resulted into reintegration with the rest of Germany. This coin, along with accompanying twenty, fifty and hundred franken were issued by the French for the region in the 1950's. It was minted to the standard of the French ten francs of the Fourth Republic.

Recorded mintage: 11,000,000.
