Aureo sale 232, lot 447
The first specimen was lot 21703 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Alfonso XII of Spain gold 4 Pesos 1882, MS64 NGC, a superb example of this rare type with full mint bloom and appealing light toning - one of the nicest we have seen." The second specimen shown was lot 447 in Aureo y Calico sale 232 (Barcelona, March 2011), where it sold for 2,100 euros (about US$3,465 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[2] noted,
"1882. Manila. 4 pesos. Bella. Escasa. EBC+. (Four pesos of 1882, Manila mint, nice, scarce, choice extremely fine.)"
This date is the commonest of the four dates known of this type (1880, 1881, 1882 and 1885) but is still very rare, unlike the four pesos of Isabel II, of which several million were struck.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, .875 fine gold, .190 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-17569, Cal. 76, KM 151.
