This specimen was lot 1195 in Goldberg sale 46 (Beverly Hills, May 2008), where it sold for $1,350. The catalog description[1] noted,
"Peru. Republic. 8 Reales, 1853-MB (Lima). Barre Liberty type; small letters in legend. Tripartite shield of arms flanked by wreath, and crowned above by oak wreath. Reverse: Pallas Athene, as Liberty wearing peaked cap, stands frontal holding upright spear, one hand rests on shield. Better strike, but some softness to centers. Quite clean and lustrous. Medium to deep, even smoky toning - some fine coloring to recesses, especially on obverse. One-year type with 'small legends' and reeded edge. One of the finest known exmples. NGC graded MS-61."

The specimen shown is one of a series struck at the Lima mint 1841-55. At this point, the branch mints Cuzco and Arequipa were winding down their operations after being very busy in the 1820's and 30's. The last Cuzco 8 reales was issued in 1840 (KM 142.9) and the last Arequipa 8 reales was in 1841 (KM 142.11, an extreme rarity). The Pasco mint was open and made an irregular issue of 4 reales 1843-57 (KM 151.4 thru KM 151.10). Even the later Lima issues are less prolific than the 1828-40 period, with the date shown valued about seven times the price of the earlier issue.

Recorded mintage: unknown. This date is priced about triple the commonest date (1843).

Specification: 27.07 g, .903 silver, .786 troy oz ASW, this specimen: 27.02 grams.

Catalog reference: WR-23 var.; Eliz-169; KM-142.12.
