Peru 1853-L MB 8 escudos

This specimen was lot 31665 in Heritage sale 3073 (Chicago, April 2019), where it sold for $1,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 8 Escudos 1853 LIMA-MB MS61 NGC, Lima mint. The scarcest date of this short-lived three-year type. Some typical die wear noted, but the fields still maintain significant luster, especially on the reverse." This type was struck at Cuzco 1826-45 and at Lima 1826-40 and 1850-55. This subtype, struck 1853-55, is marked by having "LIMA" spelled out in full on the reverse.
