The first specimen was lot 20492 in Ponterio sale 161 (Chicago, August 2011), where it sold for $1,840. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Papal States. Piastra (Scudo of 80 Bolognini), 1643-XXI. Urban VIII (1623-44). Nicely toned. NGC XF-40." Silver piastri are popular with collectors not only for their Catholic associations but also the extraordinarily vivid portraits of the various popes, including Urban VIII shown here.
