Panama 1983 centesimo rev DC.jpg

This specimen, struck for Panama by the Royal Canadian Mint in 1983, was struck on blanks matching the U.S. cent. The SCWC lists this type in bronze (KM 22, issued 1961-87) and copper-plated zinc (KM 22a, 1983 only). Simultaneously, the Franklin mint was striking centesimos for the sets it marketed, using a facing bust of chief Urraca (KM 33, issued 1975-82). Unfortunately, collecting Panamanian coins lost its popularity after the Franklin mint overissued proof sets and commemoratives in the 1970's and 1980's. Today, few Panamanian coins sell for more than melt.

Recorded mintage: 5,000,000 bronze plus 45,000,000 copper-plated zinc.

Specification: bronze or copper-plated zinc, 19.05 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 22.
