This type, struck 1838-40 in reasonable quantities, is available in circulated condition. Stars were added to the obverse in 1838 and the obverse was modified again in 1840. This date is also known with a "small stars" variety and a substantial premium attaches thereto.
Recorded mintage: 2,255,000.
Specification: 1.34 g, .900 fine silver, .038 troy oz ASW, 15.5 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Christian Gobrecht.
