This issue, minted in Lisbon for the Portuguese colony of Mozambique, is from a type issued 1953-74 in fairly large numbers. This date is somewhat scarce tho the issues from the 1960's are common. It is accompanied by a bronze fifty centavos and copper-nickel 2½ escudos and silver five and ten escudos. In the 1960's, nationalists in Mozambique began their agitation for independence, triggering a multifactional war that continued after the Portuguese withdrew in 1975.
