Mozambique 1935 5 escudos
This specimen was part of lot 28185 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), which sold for $282. The catalog description noted, "Half Dozen Coins, Tokens and a Medal, Each grading approximately EF or EF+ are: ... 5 Escudos 1935.... Quality is likely typical, attributions of the tokens is tentative. From The Dana Roberts Collection and Study Group." This issue minted in Lisbon for the Portuguese colony of Mozambique, is one of a type struck 1935 only. It was accompanied by a 2½ escudos. In the mid-1960's, nationalists in Mozambique began their agitation for independence, triggering a multifactional war that continued after the Portuguese withdrew in 1975.
