Mexico 1884-Mo M 10 centavos

This specimen is a common date of a series struck 1869-97 at the Mexico City mint. This ten centavos piece replaced the silver one real struck since colonial times. Several transitional designs were issued 1863-70, including one by the Maximilian regime, before settling on this type. It, in turn, was replaced by a ten centavos piece with a redesigned reverse in 1898. This specimen was lot 8958 in Ponterio sale 159 (Baltimore, March 2011), where it sold for $258.75. The catalog description[1] noted, “MEXICO. Mexico City. 10 Centavos, 1884-MoM. NGC MS-66."
