Mexico 1881Ho centavo rev Ponterio 169-11341.jpg

This specimen is one of a type struck in Mexico 1869-81 and 1886-97. Hermosillo struck this type 1875-81 only and all the dates are scarce in nice condition. Guanajuato, Culiacan, Alamos, Zacatecas and Mexico City also struck centavos. No mintmasters' initials appear on the copper coinage. The second specimen is much better struck but, alas, is marred by corrosion. The third specimen was lot 11341 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $546. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Hermosillo. Centavo, 1881-Ho. NGC AU-55 BN."

Recorded mintage: 459,000.

Specification: 8 g, copper, 25 mm diameter, reeded edge.

Catalog reference: KM 391.5.
