Mexico SB517-21254r.jpg

This specimen was lot 21254 in Stack's Bowers ANA Auction (Denver, CO, August 2017), where it sold for $1,527.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Centavo, 1874-Oa. Oaxaca Mint. NGC VF Details--Scratches. VERY RARE date as are all large centavos from this mint. Mintage of only 4,835 pieces. Far inferior examples graded NGC Good Details - Scratches from our November, 2012 Baltimore auction, Lot # 11365 hammered down for $1,300 (this example had many scratches on both obverse and reverse) and from our March, 2011 Baltimore auction, Lot # 8840 graded VERY GOOD with light porosity hammered down at $2,750. In both cases the strike was not nearly as well executed or defined as the present example. Two light scratches from long ago now toned over and blend nicely with the rest of the obverse. Slightly porous surfaces as is usual for the issue, but overall a nice wholesome example with an excellent strike and attractive brown patina. Sure to excite even the most advanced collectors of Republican coinage." The Oaxaca mint, which struck this type 1872-75, is widely recognized as the rarest mint for one centavos and decimal minors in general. The five and ten centavos are scarce and twenty-five and fifty centavos don't exist.

Recorded mintage: 4,835.

Specification: 8 g, copper, 25 mm diameter, reeded edge.

Catalog reference: KM-391.7; Grove-5558.
