This date is from a series struck 1869-93 at the Potosi mint. The first specimen was lot 6481 in Ponterio sale 155 (Baltimore, November 2010), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 5 Centavos, 1872-PiO. VERY RARE date. GOOD-VERY GOOD." The second specimen was lot 11319 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $822. The catalog description[2] noted, "MEXICO. 5 Centavos, 1872-PiO. RARE date. Slightly off-round planchet, as made. VERY FINE." Altho this date is not listed as rare by the SCWC, it is priced thirty times higher than a type coin (1889-92). Assayer O is listed for 1870-73.

Specification: 1.35 g, .903 fine silver, 14 mm diameter, .039 troy oz ASW.
