This specimen was struck at Chihuahua, an early date of a type struck there 1871-72 and 1883-89. This date is noted as quite scarce. The first specimen was lot 9052 in Ponterio sale 159 (Baltimore, March 2011), where it sold for $373.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Chihuahua. 25 Centavos, 1872-CHM. Very scarce date. Toned. VERY FINE." Many dates of the balance scale twenty-five centavos are unknown in high grade.

Recorded mintage: 24,000.

Specification: 6.77 g, .903 fine silver, .196 troy oz ASW.
