Mexico 1854-Do CP 1/2 escudo

This specimen was lot 23306 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $504. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 1/2 Escudo, 1854-DoCP. Durango Mint. PCGS AU-58 Secure Holder. Pleasing for the grade with a good strike and attractive coloration. The sole certified example at PCGS. A VERY RARE date according to Gold Coins of the Early Mexican Republic 1823-1873 by Richard Long." The Durango mint struck half escudos 1833-38, 1843-55, 1859-64 and is generally considered a common mint tho many dates are rare.
