Sincona sale 35, lot 5242
This specimen was lot 5242 in Sincona sale 35 (Zurich, October 2016), where it sold for 16,000 CHF (about US$18,993 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Grisons | Kanton, 16 Franken, Dublone 1813. Sehr selten. Nur 100 Exemplare geprägt. Prachtvolle Erhaltung. FDC. (canton of Grisons, duplone of sixteen franken, 1813. Very rare. Only 100 pieces struck, Cabinet piece. Brilliant uncirculated.)"
The canton of Graubunden (Grisons in French) issued a variety of coins during 1807-42, ranging from billon 1/6 batzen to a gold 16 franken (shown here). Forty batzen = four franken = one thaler and ten rappen = one batzen.

Recorded mintage: 100.

Specification: 7.64 g, .900 fine gold; this specimen 7.63 g.
