Gibraltar (1841) 1/2 quart
This specimen was lot 24815 in Heritage sale 3026 (Long Beach, October 2013), where it sold for $1,410. The catalog description noted, "Victoria Proof Half Quart ND (1841), PR66 BN NGC, exquisite quality and beautiful appearance, fully struck with deeply mirrored fields, and luxurious pinkish blue iridescence perfectly distributed on each side. A coiner's masterpiece, very rare in this condition. KM value is $1350. This wonderful specimen deserves to top that." This coin was part of a brief issue of circulating copper coinage comprising half, one and two quarts. Some proofs were struck for collectors 1860-61 and the coinage ceased until the colony fell into the clutches of the Popjoy mint in recent times.
