Jean Elsen sale 141, lot 1307
This specimen was lot 1307 in Jean Elsen sale 141 (Brussels, June 2019), where it sold for €140 (about US$186 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AR écu aux palmes, 1695A, Paris. 2e réformation. D/ B. à d., cuirassé à l'antique. R/ Ecu de France rond, couronné, entre deux palmes. Réformé sur un écu aux huit L de Rouen. Nettoyé. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, silver écu of the palms of 1695, Paris mint, second reformation. Obverse: armored bust right; reverse: crowned round arms of France between two palms. Struck over an écu of the 8 "L's" of Rouen. Cleaned, Very Fine.)"
This type was struck 1693-1701 in large quantities, mostly overstriking older écus ("flans reformés"--see the specimen shown for the visible undertype). It was succeeded by the écu aux insignes. Droulers[2] prices this date as common date, but even a common date is priced 20% higher than an écu à la mèche longue. Its original face value was 3 livres 8 sols tournois, which was reduced to 3 livres 5 sols tournois in July 1701.

Recorded mintage: 1,533 fn + unknown rf[2].

Specification: 27.45 g, .917 fine silver, 38-41 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVVM FAC REGEM, this specimen 27,25 g.
