Jean Elsen sale 145, lot 1895
This specimen was lot 1895 in Jean Elsen sale 145 (Brussels, September 2020), where it sold for €120 (about US$171 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Philips IV (1621-1665), AR halve patagon, 1665, Brugge. Vz/ Gekroond stokkenkruis met een vuurijzer tussen het jaartal en het juweel van het Gulden Vlies. Kz/ Gekroond wapenschild omringd door de keten van het Gulden Vlies. Op een brede muntplaat geslagen. Zeer Fraai. (county of Flanders, Philip IV, 1621-65, silver half patagon of 1665, Bruges mint. Obverse: Burgundian cross with jewel of the Golden Fleece dividing the date; reverse: crowned arms, Order of the Golden Fleece around. Struck on a broad planchet, Very Fine.)"
Patagons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liege and Franche Comte) during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and ducatons. The type shown here was struck at the Bruges mint 1622-23, 1631-35, 1641, 1646-49, 1652-65. A very similar coin was struck for Brabant. The SCWC notes the Flemish issues as the most common, followed by the Brabant issue, tho none are plentiful today. The half and quarter patagons are considerably scarcer than the whole patagons. The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors.

Reported Mintage: unknown.

Specification: 14.05 g, 0.875 fine silver, this specimen 14,00 g.

Catalog reference: KM 33, G.H. 330-6; Delm. 305; V.H. 646.
