Finland 1915 5 pennia
This specimen was lot 34314 in Heritage sale 3038 (Dallas, January 2015), where it sold for $1,057.50. The catalog description noted, "Russian Duchy Proof 5 Pennia 1915 PR65 Red PCGS. Ex-George Gund III Collection. A boldly struck Proof with full iridescence. Rare in this state of preservation." This type is listed for 1901-17 and was struck for Finland by the czarist administration. Russian defeats in World War One enabled the Finns, who had long chafed under Russian rule, to declare independence. This date is common in all grades, suggesting that it was hoarded.
