Steve Album sale 38, lot 3654
Ethiopia SA38-3654r.jpg

This specimen was lot 3654 in Stephen Album sale 38 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2020), where it sold for $95.20. The catalog description[1] noted, "ETHIOPIA: Federal Democratic Republic, AR 20 birr, EE2000 (2008), New Ethiopian Millennium - Discovery of Dinknesh (Lucy), the 3.2 million year old hominid, struck at the Austrian State Mint with COA and original case of issue, Proof, S." This is a very scarce and unusual NCLT featuring the skeleton of the famous hominid "Lucy". The reverse depicts a coffee bean, a native product of Ethiopia. Given the rarity of this issue, we doubt that the 50,000 minted were all sold. The Mengistu regime collapsed in 1991 and the successor government has issued very little coinage

Recorded mintage: 50,000 (probably not all sold).

Specifications: 30 g, 0.900 fine silver, 40 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-76.
