Eritrea 1918-R tallero
This specimen was lot 4705 in Goldberg sale 65 (Los Angeles, September 2011), where it sold for $138. The catalog description noted, "Eritrea. Tallero, 1918-R. Vittorio Emmanuele III. Female bust right. Reverse: Crowned eagle. Cleaned. About Extremely Fine." Italy in the 1890's was late coming to the party of African colonizers and only managed to seize a few scraps of wasteland not wanted by the other powers. Her attempts to conquer Ethiopia were ignominiously defeated and she was forced to content herself with Eritrea, along the coast of the Red Sea. This crown was issued in 1918 to compete with the well known Maria Theresia thaler. It failed and the coin is today scarce.
Recorded mintage: 510,000.
Specifications: 28.06 g, .835 silver, .753 troy oz ASW, 40 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: Dav-28; KM-5.
