Steve Album sale 30, lot 1649
Eritrea SA30-1649o.jpg

This specimen was lot 1649 in Stephen Album sale 30 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2018), where it sold for $223.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "ERITREA: Umberto I, 1889-1900, AR lira, 1890-R, AU." Altho this coin does not receive the attention of the larger five lire (KM 4), it does not turn up often. This type was struck at Rome 1890-92. Italy in the 1890's was late coming to the party of African colonizers and only managed to seize a few scraps of wasteland not wanted by the other powers. Her attempts to conquer Ethiopia were ignominiously defeated and she was forced to content herself with Eritrea, along the coast of the Red Sea.

Recorded mintage: 598,000.

Specification: 5 g, .835 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-2.
