The first specimen was lot 5542 in Goldberg sale 72 (Los Angeles, February 2013), where it sold for $253. The catalog description[2] noted, "Eritrea. 50 Centesimi, 1890-M. Umberto I. Crowned head right. NGC graded About Uncirculated, Details (Surface Hairlines)." Altho this coin does not receive the attention of the larger five lire (KM 4), it does not turn up often. This one year type is a product of the Milan mint just before it was closed. Italy in the 1890's was late coming to the party of African colonizers and only managed to seize a few scraps of wasteland not wanted by the other powers. Her attempts to conquer Ethiopia were ignominiously defeated and she was forced to content herself with Eritrea, along the coast of the Red Sea.

Recorded mintage: 1,800,000.

Specification: 2.5 g, .835 silver, .067 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-1; Pagani-637.
