Banco Central de Guatemala
As part of the currency reform of 1926, in which the peso was abandoned in favor of the quetzal, the private banks were deprived of the right of issue of banknotes. The Banco Central de Guatemala was established as the sole bank of issue. The bank, however, was still partly privately held. It is considered transitional to the current system, where the government issues notes on its own account.
Banco de Guatemala
In 1949, the Banco de Guatemala was established as the sole bank of issue. The bank, wholly government owned, superseded the still partly privately held Banco Central de Guatemala.
