This five décimos was struck in Medellin, Colombia, of a type issued 1877-85. The Medellin mint began issuing five décimos in 1868 along with the Bogotá mint, the denomination being completely unknown in Colombia until then. The Bogotá mint, however, switched to fifty centavos pieces (of the same size and weight) in 1872. Production increased after the issue of silver pesos ceased in 1871. Popayán also issued a few 1868-78 but concentrated on gold coins. To the delight and despair of collectors, the half dollars of Colombia come in a profusion of dates, styles, varieties and errors and form a collecting specialty all their own. The 1877/4-M, however, is not rare, tho scarcer than the common dates of 1880-85. This overdate is the only variety listed for 1877. The third specimen was lot 42032 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $4,800. The catalog description[1] noted,
"Restrepo Plate 1877-M Barre Head 5 Decimos COLOMBIA. 1877-M 5 Decimos. Medellín mint. AU-55 (PCGS). A rare date within this Barre head type, listed by Restrepo as just five known; Burnett didn't list this date at all. Frosty and lustrous brilliant silver gray with a somewhat granular appearance due to a soft strike. The lowest curls of the portrait are ill-defined, as are the eagle and top of the shield on the reverse. The quality remains choice, particularly so for this elusive issue. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian Coins."

Recorded mintage: 168,000.

Specification: 12.5 g, .835 fine silver, .335 troy oz ASW, edge lettered DIOS LEI LIBERTAD.

Catalog reference: KM 161.1; the third specimen KM 153.5, Restrepo 297.10.
