Colombia H3049-30634r.jpg
The first specimen was lot 808 in Aureo y Calicó sale 246 (Barcelona, September 2012), where it sold for 1,100 € (about $1,670 including buyer's fees). The catalog[1] noted,
"Carlos IV (1788-1808). 1808. Popayán. JF. 8 escudos. Leves rayitas. Parte de brillo original. Escasa así. MBC+/EBC. (Charles IV (1788-1808), eight escudos of 1808, Popayán mint, light marks, some mint luster, scarce thus, very fine.)"
The second specimen was lot 30634 in Heritage sale 3049 (Long Beach, September 2016), where it sold for $1,468.75. The catalog description[2] noted, "Charles IV gold 8 Escudos 1808 P-JF AU53 NGC, Popayan mint. Abrasions reside in the open fields and are commensurate with the grade, while the protected surfaces retain significant reflective flash." The type was struck in Popayán in Nueva Granada (now Colombia) 1808-20. Nuevo Reino and its neighbor Popayán were the most prolific issuers of gold coins during the colonial period and this coin is common, tho the price of gold has made this coin expensive. Assayer JF is recorded for 1792-1816.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, .875 fine gold, .761 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Fr-61, KM 62.2, Onza-1075, Cal. 91.
