Sedwick sale 25, lot 36

This specimen was lot 36 in Sedwick sale 25 (Winter Park, FL, May 2018), where it sold for $7,140. The catalog description[1] noted, "Bogota, Colombia, cob 2 escudos, 1708, no assayer (Arce), posthumous Charles II, NGC MS 64, finest known in NGC census, ex-1715 Fleet (designated on label). Superb luster and grade, with choice full shield showing transposed lions and castles (like Restrepo-M66.40 but this date not listed), very bold full date outside of off-center cross, finest in NGC census by NINE grades. NGC #4721767-001. From the 1715 Fleet, pedigreed to the Santa Fe Collection (our Auction #10), with original lot-tag #51." The production of cobs continued sporadically into the 1740's. It was superseded by milled portrait coinage. As with most cobs, specimens with legible dates form a minority of survivors.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, .917 fine gold, .199 troy oz ASW, this specimen 6.74 grams.
