Áureo y Calicó sale 347, lot 174
This specimen was lot 174 in Áureo y Calicó sale 347 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it sold for €5,500 (about US$7,258 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"1665. Felipe IV. Santa Fe de Nuevo Reino. PR. 4 reales. Todos los datos perfectos. Muy rara así. EBC-/EBC. (kingdom of Spain, Philip IV, four reales of 1665, Nuevo Reino mint. All the data is clear, very rare thus, about extremely fine.)"
The type was struck in Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) in Nueva Granada (now Colombia) 1651-58, 1661-65 but is now rare. As is typical of cobs, the majority lack legible dates. The Cartagena mint, during its brief period of operation, struck some in 1655; these are very rare. The production of cobs continued sporadically into the 1740's. It was superseded by milled pillar coinage.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.54 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 13,41 g.

Catalog reference: KM 10.1, AC. 1154, Restrepo M38-18, Cayón-6183.
