Aureo sale 243, lot 741

This specimen was lot 741 in Aureo y Calicó sale 243 (Barcelona, April 2012), where it sold for 450 € (about $680 including buyer's fees).

The catalog[1] noted,
"1800. Carlos IV. Santiago. AJ. 8 reales. Leves golpecitos. Parte de brillo original. Atractiva. Rara y más así. EBC-. (Eight reales of 1800, Santiago mint. Light marks, some luster, attractive, rare, about extremely fine.)"
Despite what seems to be a fairly substantial recorded mintage and nearly continuous production during 1791-1808, Santiago portrait eight reales of Charles IV are scarce though not rare like the earlier bust eight reales of Charles III. Many can be found as the undertype of Brazilian 960 réis of 1810-26. A rare error is known with the king's name misspelled "CROLUS".

Recorded mintage: 184,000.

Specification: 27.07 g, .896 fine silver, .780 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-13919, KM 51, Cal. 748.
