British West Africa 1911-H penny
This specimen was lot 22178 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it sold for $188. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRITISH WEST AFRICA. Penny, 1911-H. NGC MS-66. One year type with "NIGERIA" in legend. Tied with three other examples for finest certified. An original superb gem in every regard." Earlier issues for British West Africa (1/10 pennies of 1907-10) bore the legend "NIGERIA-BRITISH WEST AFRICA" which was carried forward to this initial issue of pennies for George V. It is accompanied by copper-nickel 1/10 and half pennies. In 1912, the "NIGERIA" was dropped and the penny was struck in that form until 1936.
