Sincona sale 43, lot 4131
This specimen was lot 4131 in Sincona sale 43 (Zurich, October 2017), where it sold for 13,000 CHF (about US$15,513 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Stadt und Kanton Basel, Taler 1543. Baselstab zwischen der geteilten Jahreszahl. Rv. Reichsadler nach links. . Äusserst selten. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Überdurchschnittliche Erhaltung. (city and canton of Basel, thaler of 1543. Obverse: city arms divides the date; reverse: imperial eagle to left. Extremely rare, Very fine-extremely fine, Better than average.)"
Altho the Swiss cantons had won de facto independence from the Empire by the late fifteenth century, the fact was not officially recognized until 1648, when the confederation left the empire by the treaties of Westphalia which ended the Thirty Years War. This rare type is listed in Davenport for 1542-43, 1547-48, 1552 and is the first thaler from this canton. It was accompanied by a double thaler (Dav-8717).
