The first specimen was lot 1712 in Jean Elsen sale 117 (Brussels, June 2013), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"SAINT EMPIRE, Ferdinand, archiduc (1564-1595), AR Taler, s.d. Hall. Pour le Tyrol. Droit: B. couronné et cuirassé à droite, tenant un sceptre sur l'épaule et la garde de son épée. Revers: Grand écu couronné, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. Petites griffes. Très Beau à Superbe. (Austria, archduke Ferdinand (1564-95), silver thaler without date, Hall mint, for Tyrol. Obverse: crowned and armored bust to right holding scepter and pommel of sword; reverse: large crowned arms, order of the Golden Fleece around. Tiny scratches, very fine to extremely fine.)"
The second specimen was lot 3951 in Goldberg sale 80 (Los Angeles, June 2014), where it sold for $969.37. The catalog description[2] noted, "Austria. Taler, ND (Hall). Archduke Ferdinand, 1564-1595. Crowned bust right, holding sword and scepter. Reverse: Crowned arms in Order chain. Light golden toning with reflective surfaces. A lovely mint state example. NGC graded MS-63." The third specimen was lot 3222 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $423. The catalog description[3] noted, "AUSTRIA. Taler, ND. Hall Mint. Archduke Ferdinand (1564-95). NGC MS-61. Nice strike and dark attractive toning." Davenport notes a considerable number of thalers and multiple thalers struck for the archduke, Dav-8088 thru Dav-8103, all without dates. None are rare.
