Straits Settlements 1874 cent
This specimen was lot 23638 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it did not sell. The catalog description noted, "STRAITS SETTLEMENTS. Cent, 1874. London Mint. Victoria. NGC EF-45 Brown. Above average for the type, with gentle even brown patina and no obnoxious marks." The type was struck in 1872-83 after the Straits Settlements were made a separate crown colony and is scarce in nice condition despite the very large mintage. It was converted to bronze for the 1884 issue (KM 9a) and given a reeded edge for the 1889 issue (KM 16).
