In 1885, Alfonso XII died young of tuberculosis, leaving a posthumous son who was crowned Alfonso XIII. In 1869, the peso was reduced to 25 grams and set equal to five pesetas with each peseta divisible into 100 centimos. This system would prevail until the coming of the euro. After the turn of the century, repeated fiscal crises interrupted regular coinage. The next issue of fifty centimos would be in [[Spain 1926-PC S 50 centimos|1926]]. This design shows the king as a young adult, no longer a [[Spain 1894-PG V 50 centimos (94)|boy king]]. In 1931, he was overthrown and exiled.
