In 1885, Alfonso XII died young of tuberculosis, leaving a posthumous son who was crowned Alfonso XIII. In 1869, the peso was reduced to 25 grams and set equal to five pesetas with each peseta divisible into 100 centimos. This system would prevail until the coming of the euro. After the turn of the century, repeated fiscal crises, exacerbated by the defeat in the Spanish American War, interrupted regular coinage. This design was also used in 1904. The actual date of issue is in the tiny stars bracketing the date. The next issue of fifty centimos would be in [[Spain 1926-PC S 50 centimos|1926]]. In 1931, the king was overthrown and exiled. This specimen was lot 1462 in Áureo y Calicó sale 346 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it sold for €17 (about US$23 including buyer's fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''1904*10. Alfonso XIII. PCV. 50 céntimos. Bella. Brillo original. S/C.'' (kingdom of [[Spain]], Alfonso XIII, 1885-1931, fifty centimos of 1910, Handsome with mint luster, uncirculated.)"</blockquote>
