from Aureo sale 291, lot 1199
This specimen was lot 1199 in Aureo sale 291 (Barcelona, April 2017), where it sold for €50 (about US$64 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"1852. Isabel II. Barcelona. 1 real. Bella. Brillo original. Ex Colección O’Donnell, Áureo 19/11/2003, nº 173. Escasa así. S/C-. (Spain, Isabel II, one real of 1852, Barcelona mint, original luster, scarce thus, about uncirculated.)"
This Spanish one real was struck in Barcelona during the middle years of Isabel II (1833-68). This type was struck in Barcelona, Madrid and Seville 1852-55. Instead of the traditional "M" and "S" mintmarks the issues are distinguished by six, seven or eight pointed stars on the reverse (for Madrid, Seville and Barcelona). The "de vellon" coinage system, used 1808-50, was finally dropped. The twenty reales was reduced to 26.91 grams and the copper maravedis dropped in favor of 1/20, 1/10 and 1/5 reales. Unfortunately, the government, financially prostrate as usual, was unable to remint the old coins, which continued to circulate as before.

Recorded mintage: unknown; a common date.

Specification: 1.31 g, .900 fine silver, .038 troy oz ASW, this specimen 1,36 g.

Catalog reference: Cayón-16812, KM 598.1, Cal. 397.
