Peru 1799 8 reales rev DSLR.jpg

The first specimen was lot 1168 in Goldberg sale 46 (Beverly Hills, May 2008), where it sold for $750. The catalog description[1] noted, "Peru. 8 Reales, 1799-M-I (Lima). Charles IV, 1788-1808. Bust of Charles III right. Reverse: Crowned arms between pillars. Excellent even, full strike. Lovely satiny luster throughout, with only just a hint of 'cabinet friction' to cheek and shoulder of portrait. Lightly toned, with iridescent blues, greens, and russets along edge. NGC graded MS-63."

The normally reliable Goldberg description erred on this lot; the assayers' initials are clearly "IJ," not "MI." Harris[2] notes this type as common but indicates that the eight reales from Potosi and Mexico City are even more abundant.

Recorded mintage: 5,367,000.

Specification: 27.07 g, .896 fine silver, .780 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-13910, WR 10; KM 97.
