India SB220-71074r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71074 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, February 2020), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Rupee, 1900-C. Calcutta Mint. Victoria. NGC MS-62. A well struck rupee with satiny luster and light gray toning throughout." This rupee was struck at the Calcutta mint in the final years of Queen Victoria's reign. An additional 65 million were struck at the Bombay mint. They may be distinguished by a tiny mintmark in the flower directly above the "ONE" on the reverse. The type was issued beginning in 1877; earlier dates (KM 473, 1862-76) had the obverse legend "VICTORIA QUEEN."

Recorded mintage: 5,291,000 from Calcutta plus 65,237,000 from Bombay.

Specification: 11.66 g, .917 silver, .343 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-492.
