Honduras 1888/3 5 pesos
This specimen was lot 21089 in Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $4,320. The catalog description noted, "HONDURAS. 5 Pesos, 1888. NGC AU-53. The finest certified example with just one other certified by NGC at Fine, with none certified by PCGS. RARE especially so in this state of preservation and problem free. Well struck with lovely orange-red tone throughout with underlying flashy luster and fabulous eye appeal. Clearly an example which sat for a prolonged period of time. A fantastic example sure to excite the specialist of Honduran and world gold collectors alike. From the Richard Stuart Collection." This type was issued irregularly 1883-1913 but never in large quantities. Honduras is one of the poorest countries in the western hemisphere and it is unlikely the government ever had access to much bullion.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 8.06 g, .900 fine gold.
