Ponterio sale 176, lot 20344
GB 1823 2 pounds rev P176-20344.jpg

This specimen was lot 20344 in Ponterio sale 176 (Chicago, August 2013), where it sold for $4,112. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. George IV, 1820-1830. 2 Pounds, 1823. Bare bust left. Rv. Pistrucci’s classically styled St. George and the Dragon, date below. Lettered edge DECUS ET TUTAMEN ANNO REGNI IV. A very scarce regular issue type with the engraver’s initials below the bust. Beautifully struck with rather brilliant prooflike luster on both sides. A handsome coin all around. NGC MS-63. Ex: Bowers and Ruddy Galleries, 1977." The reform of 1817 terminated all guinea-denominated issues in favor of the sovereign. Large size gold issues resumed for the first time since the 1750's, but the two and five pound pieces were minted mostly for presentation.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 15.97 g, .917 fine gold, .471 troy oz AGW, lettered edge.

Catalog reference: S-3798; Fr-375; KM-690.
