This specimen was lot 20359 in Ponterio sale 176 (Chicago, August 2013), where it sold for $4,406. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. George IV, 1820-1830. Half-Sovereign, 1821. NGC PF-61 ULTRA CAMEO. Distinctive and Rare 1821 Half Sovereign Proof Laureate bust left. Rv. Intricately styled crowned shield, garland of flowers at sides; ANNO 1821. A rare one-year type. The coin features a distinctive and very charming reverse style, one that is much different from other gold coins in the series. Some minor hairlines are noted. Ex: Seaby, 1982." The reform of 1817 terminated all guinea-denominated issues in favor of the sovereign. This one year type is rare.

Recorded mintage: 231,000 plus proofs.

Specification: 3.99 g, .917 fine gold, .117 troy oz AGW.
