This specimen was lot 33110 in Heritage sale 3049 (Long Beach, September 2016), where it sold for $940. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "Empire Mark 1880-D MS64 NGC, Munich mint. One of the better dates/mintmarks in the series--especially at this level of Mint State--showcasing graphite tone that clings to the obverse eagle motif and a reverse that expresses an irregular pattern of argent and blue-gray color. Visually superb and with a matching technical quality to boot. From the Reverend Dr. James G.K. McClure Collection." This type was struck 1873-87 at nine mints; this specimen is a product of the Karlsruhe mint ("G"). In 1891, a modified eagle was introduced and this denomination was struck in that form until 1918 (see [[Germany 1899-D mark|KM 14]]).
