Ponterio sale 173, lot 1255
France 1857A centime rev Ponterio 173-1255.jpg

This specimen was lot 1255 in Ponterio sale 173 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $470. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Proof Centime Struck in Copper, 1857-A. PCGS PROOF-65 RB Secure Holder. cf. KM-775.1; cf. Gad-86; cf. VG-3521." The specimen shown is a one centime, bare head, of a type struck under the Second Empire of France 1853-57. Several branch mints were reopened in the 1850's to recoin all the worn coppers in circulation, some dating back to the 1790's. There are 38 dates in the series. The 1857-A from Paris is a common date but proofs are rare. The total production for the series is about 67 million. All the bronze centime pieces were demonetized in 1940 but by then were worthless.

Recorded mintage: 1,999,571.

Specification: 1 g, bronze, 15 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by Jean-Jacques Barré (1793-1855).

Catalog reference: F.102/32, KM 775.1, Gad-36.
